Project Partners

This project is a collaboration between Academia led by the School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Legon, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ghana led by Ghana NCD Alliance (GhNCDA), Ghana Public Health Association (GPHA) and Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND).

The School of Public Health was established in 1994, in response to a growing demand for a cadre of Public Health Practitioners who will provide leadership in Public Health reforms in the country primarily to train Public Health Practitioners. The training enables these highly trained health professionals to perform effectively at District, Regional and National levels within governmental, quasi-governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations.

The Ghana Non-Communicable Disease Alliance (Ghana NCD Alliance- GhNCDA) is a network of NGOs with a common vision of creating a healthy Ghana, free from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and a key partner of government; since its inception in 2017, the GhNCDA has worked assiduously towards achieving its vision through;

Ghana Public Health Association (GPHA) is an association of public health practitioners in Ghana established and incorporated in July 1992. It was reincorporated in March 2014 as a non-governmental organization under the Companies Code of 1963 (ACT 179). The vision of the association is a healthy Ghanaian population for maximum productivity.

The Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) is the professional body representing the professional, educational, public and workplace interests of licensed/Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists in Ghana. The Academy seeks to advance nutritional knowledge and practice through research, training and professional development opportunities to achieve optimal nutritional well-being of every Ghanaian.

Prof. Amos Laar
Principal Investigator
University of Ghana School of Public Health

Prof. Amos Laar has academic training in Nutrition, Public Health, and Bioethics. In his independent scholarship, he draws on theoretical, conceptual, and methodological perspectives from the social sciences, bioethics, and public health to understand how physical environment, social environment, as well as structural forces affect health. Currently, his research focuses on two distinct, yet related areas of public health – bioethics (ethics & public health; health & human rights, food ethics, & nutrition rights); public health nutrition (food literacy, nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, and the nexus between food environment and health).

Prof. Charles Agyemang
Academic Medical Center
University of Amsterdam
Netherlands

Prof. Charles Agyemang is a Professor of Global Migration, Ethnicity & Health at Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam. He received his PhD from Erasmus Medical Centre, University of Rotterdam, and Master degree at Edinburgh University Medical School. His research is focused on ethnic inequalities in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and CVDs in low- and middle-income countries. He is the principal investigator of the RODAM study – European Commission funded project on gene-environmental interaction on obesity & diabetes among African migrants.

Prof. Michelle Holdsworth
National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), France

Prof. Michelle Holdsworth is a Research Director at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and is based in the Montpellier Interdisciplinary centre on Sustainable Agri-food systems (UMR MoISA). She conducts research and capacity building work in public health nutrition with partners in the Global South. She is a Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian and her research experience falls broadly within: dietary transitions, changing food environments and policy development in the context of the multiple burdens of malnutrition in Global South countries.

Prof. Francis B. Zotor

University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana

Prof. Francis Bruno Zotor is a Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health. He was the founding Director, Office of International Programmes. He has a doctoral training in public health nutrition, is a registered public health nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition of the UK and Northern Ireland and a specialised training in pedagogy with a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy of the UK and Ireland. He is a recognized leader spanning over two decades in nutrition across Africa and has been instrumental in driving and promoting the establishment of a strong nutrition profession on the continent, training and research to underpin programme delivery especially across the health and education sectors in Africa.

Dr. Stefanie Vandevijvere

Sciensano Research Institute, Belgium

Dr. Stefanie Vandevijvere is a Senior Public Health Nutrition Scientist at the Scientific Institute of Public Health (Sciensano) in Belgium and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Her research focuses on nutrition policies for obesity prevention globally. Her work aims to support the development and implementation of policies to effectively and equitably improve the quality of population diets.

Prof. Richmond Aryeetey

Prof. Richmond Aryeetey is an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Public Health. He has worked in Ghana as a researcher in maternal and child health/nutrition for the past 20 years. His research interests are multidisciplinary and cuts across maternal, infant and child nutrition, community health, Food systems, and health policy analysis. He has expertise in Monitoring and Evaluation, Training, and Facilitation.

Dr. Kobby Mensah 
University of Ghana Business School

Dr. Kobby Mensah is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS). His research interests are in health, tourism and political marketing. In recent times Kobby has been involved in consumer behaviour research in health. He is part of an international team of researchers, led by the University of Sheffield, investigating what drives unhealthy dietary changes in order to prevent diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Charles Apprey
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

Dr. Charles Apprey is currently a Snr. Lecturer and Researcher at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with expertise in the area of Clinical and Public Health Nutrition. He has many years of laboratory experience and a recipient of grant to set up a centre of Excellence in Periodic Table for Food Initiative at the KNUST.

Prof. Reginald Adjetey Annan

Prof. Reginald Adjetey Annan is an Associate Professor of Public Health Nutrition at College of Science, KNUST. He had his postgraduate education at the Institute of Human Nutrition, University of Southampton, and went on to coordinate the International Malnutrition Task Force of the IUNS activities as a post-doctoral research fellow in Southampton. He has made major contributions to nutrition research that spans the lifecycle, engages policy levers to translate research findings, and has co-authored over 200 peered-reviewed publications, technical reports, conference abstracts, and commentaries:

Prof. Paul Armah Aryee
University for Development Studies (UDS)

Prof. Paul Armah Aryee is an Associate Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the Nutritional Sciences Department of the School of Allied Health Sciences, University for Development Studies (UDS). He is well-groomed in the Human Nutritional Sciences, Public Health, and Human Physiology. Aside from his passion for training and mentoring graduate and post-graduate students of medical and allied health sciences, he is also an astute researcher and advocates for public health issues.

Dr. Charles F. Hayfron-Benjamin
University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS)

Dr. Charles F. Hayfron-Benjamin is a physician-scientist, currently a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School, and a specialist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. He serves as the consultant for the lung function program at the University of Ghana Medical School. He is also a bioethicist with a keen interest in clinical research ethics and serves on research ethics committees including that of the University of Ghana College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Phyllis Ohene-Adjei is a medical doctor with further training in Public Health. Her research & professional practice focus on Maternal & Child Nutrition and Health. She has experience working in the West Africa sub-region with health institutions, civil societies, NGOs and academic institutions. Her relevant expertise includes project management, nutrition & health research, and report writing.

Dr. Krystal Rampalli

 

Dr. Krystal Rampalli is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Drivers of Food Choice Program in the Department of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, USA. She is interested in adolescent health and nutrition, health communication, policy and advocacy, food choice, and non-communicable disease research in low and middle-income countries experiencing rapidly changing food environments.

Dr. Kasim Abdulai 

Dr. Kasim Abdulai is a Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics. He has academic training in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Public Health. Dr. Abdulai has several years’ experience in the field of research and has worked on diverse research projects. His research focuses on public health nutrition: nutrition and HIV, and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases.

Mr. Labram M. Musah is a public heath enthusiast who believes that with intentional policy restructuring, the socioeconomic and health consequences of NCDs in Ghana and beyond would be a thing of the past. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Professional Studies and an MBA in Project Management from the Wisconsin International University College.

Ms. Juliet Akuamoah Boateng

Policy and Advocacy Officer, GhNCDA

Ms. Juliet Akuamoah Boateng is a Policy and Advocacy Officer with Ghana NCD Alliance. She has a background in General Psychology from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Having served as a National Service staff with the Food and Drugs Authority, she is abreast with knowledge in food and drug labelling, quality management and post market surveillance.

Mr. James Mckeown Amoah
National Organiser, GPHA

Mr. James Mckeown Amoah is the national organizer for the Ghana Public Health Association and the lead person for this project. Prior to becoming the national organizer, he, served as the public relations officer for the association. He is a registered nurse working at the renal dialysis unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as a Senior Nursing Officer.

Dr. Kingsley Pereko
President, GAND 

Dr. Kingsley Pereko for over 20 years now has been involved in community-based nutrition and public health intervention. The last fourteen (14) years of his career were spent teaching and conducting research in lifestyle, community-based interventions to address maternal and child nutrition, and nutrition and food security. His research focus over the years has been on nutrition and lifestyle, community-based interventions to address maternal and child nutrition, nutrition, and food security.

Mr. Percival Delali Agordoh
Vice President, GAND

Mr. Percival Delali Agordoh serves as the National Vice President of the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) after leading the erstwhile Ghana Dietetic Association (GDA) into a merger with the Ghana Nutrition Association as the National President. He is also an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, Ghana.
